This is a painting of the negative space, the warm yellow sky, rather like a woodcut or block print. The turquoise of the branches is a watery, sheer under layer and the thicker butter yellow light-filled sky was painted over the blue slowly in layer after layer scrubbed on to let a bit of the dark behind it show through. The dark under the light makes the sky glow like a sunrise behind trees at dawn.
