20 x 20" Oil on canvas.
This is a painting of the Japanese maple in my front yard. The red of the branches is a thin, sheer under layer and the creamy robin’s egg blue sky light-filled sky was painted on top. This is essentially a painting of the negative space—all that is not the tree— rather like one carves a woodcut or block print. The darker red first layer under the light blue-green makes the sky glow like a sunrise at dawn.
The 1.5” deep sides of the gallery-wrapped canvas are the same red as the tree leaves, creating a built-in frame.
