Daybreak Japanese Maple (36 x 36" Oil on canvas)
36 × 36 x 1.5 inches
Oil on canvas. Unframed. Wire on the back for hanging.
This is a ‘dancing peacock Japanese maple’ (Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium) also known as ‘Maiku-jaku' in Japanese.
The fuchsia of the branches is a thin translucent under layer and the pale blue sky was painted on top. This is essentially a painting of the negative space—all that is not the tree— rather like one carves a woodcut or block print.
The 1.5” deep sides of the gallery-wrapped canvas are the same rcolor as the tree leaves, creating a built-in frame.
