12 x 12 inch original acrylic painting on wood panel, FRAMED to 13 x 13 inches, original acrylic painting on wood panel)

A moody yet vibrant California sunset. Oil paintings on wood have a very different feel than on canvas. There is a smoothness from the layers of sanded white gesso underneath and the absence of a canvas fabric weave. I am drawn to the way glazes sit on the surface better than on canvas, which sags and is more porous. I find the luminosity quite beautiful. The silhouette of the emerald green palm tree has a transparent tinted glaze of color which give the painting a similar feel to encaustic paintings in which pigment is suspended in liquid (wax) though here it is suspended in linseed oil. The contrast between the warm coral sky and the cool jade green leaves is arresting. You can see the dark gray pencil lines outlining the leaves. That is deliberate.

This miniature 12 x 12" painting is framed in a 1.5 inch deep white solid wood floater frame. The framed dimensions are 13 x 13 inches. The 3/4" wood sides of the painted wood panel itself are the same coral/ salmon pink as the sky.

Framed in a 1.5 inch deep white solid wood floater frame. The same 13 x 13” size , color and style of wood frame as 3 other small paintings of this size: Sunrise Bay Laurel, Sunrise Magnolia and Afternoon Bay Laurel.

The different darker and lighter layers of this painting are thin and sheer, each showing through the next, which gives a softness and glow. You can see the dark pencil lines outlining the leaves. That is deliberate. Without those lines demarcating the silhouette, the leaves would dissolve into the very sheer sky and the design would have less impact. There is a hanging wire across the back.
