The cool palette of a winter sky at sunrise with the silhouette of sweetgum branches hanging low. The edges of the leaves are not sharp but are softened as if the world were just coming into focus on a cloudy morning. The pale ice blue sky was scrubbed on top in sheer layers with the darkness behind it peeking through and creating a vibrancy like a quiet hum. The darker lavender-blue undercoat was painted thinly and allowed to show through as the shapes of the leaves.
The sky of this painting is paler and bluer than that of "Winter Light" (60 x 36") which is entirely in shades of lavender and lilac.
The 1.5 inch deep sides are painted the darker color of the leaves, contrasting with the paler sky, acting as a built-in frame. Unframed. Wired on the back for hanging.
